Registration Rules and Procedures
1. Who Must Register?
If a foreign citizen arrives in Tajikistan without a visa and stays for more than 10 working days, he or she must register with OVIR.
This requirement also applies to foreigners planning a long-term stay.
Without registration, you cannot:
1 Purchase a local SIM card
2 Open a bank account
3 Receive or send money transfers through a bank
4 Complete various procedures involving government authorities
If you stay more than 10 working days without registration and later apply at OVIR, the inspector may impose a fine of approximately 600 somoni (around $62 USD).
If you stay more than 14 calendar days without registration and attempt to leave the country, the migration department may fine you the same amount or, in some cases, more than $70 USD.
Note: Weekends and official holidays are not counted as working days.
2. Registration Period
1 For tourist purposes, registration is usually issued for one month, even if your stay is shorter (for example, 16 days).
2 For long-term stays (for example, one year), the initial registration is typically issued for three months only.
3 After three months, you may apply for an extension of up to one year.
Three Main Ways to Obtain Registration
Option 1: Registration Through a Hotel
1 You may ask the hotel reception to:
2 Provide a blank registration form stamped by the hotel, which you submit to OVIR yourself; or
3 Complete the registration process on your behalf (this usually costs more).
Costs:
1 Individual registration: approximately 250–270 somoni
2 Through hotel services: approximately 300–500 somoni, depending on the hotel
Required documents:
1 Original passport
2 Blank form with hotel stamp
3 Passport photo (sometimes not required)
4 Cash in somoni
Option 2: Registration at a Private Address
If you are staying at a private residence, registration can be completed using the property owner’s address.
The property owner must:
1 Be present during the application
2 Sign the registration request letter
3 Provide their internal passport
4 Provide proof of property ownership (or power of attorney)
5 Provide contact phone number
6 In some cases, provide a photo
Costs:
1. 230–300 somoni
2. Additional 20 somoni for copies and application preparation
After submitting the documents, the inspector will inform you when to collect your registration card, depending on workload.
Important:
When you receive your registration document, carefully check all details, including:
1 Passport number and series
2 Dates
3 Name spelling
Even a small mistake (one missing letter or number) may cause problems with authorities.
Option 3: Through a Local Tour Company (Recommended)
The easiest option is to contact a local tour company. We will manage the entire registration process for you, and you will not need to visit OVIR personally.
How to Extend Your Registration
The extension procedure is similar to the initial registration, but you must additionally provide a certificate confirming the absence of HIV infection.
1 The laboratory is located not far from the OVIR office.
2 The process is quick.
3 You must inform the laboratory staff that the certificate is required for registration purposes.
4 Cost: approximately 35 somoni.
5 The certificate is usually issued within a few hours.
You then submit this certificate to OVIR for copying and completion of the extension process.
