What Is a GBAO Permit?
The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) was officially established in 1989, but its history goes back much further. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region became a diplomatic battleground between the United Kingdom and the Russian Empire during what is often called the “Great Game” — a struggle for influence over Central Asia and the Pamir Mountains.
As a result of these geopolitical negotiations, the Wakhan Corridor was created as a buffer zone, and the historic territory of Badakhshan was divided along the Panj River (known as the Amu Darya in Afghanistan). The right bank became part of Afghan Badakhshan, while the left bank formed what is now GBAO. The region later became an autonomous area within the Soviet Union and subsequently part of the Tajikistan.
Due to its strategic importance and long borders with Afghanistan and China, GBAO was once a strictly controlled border zone during Soviet times. Even local residents required special authorization in their passports.
Today, while citizens of Tajikistan are free to travel there, foreign visitors must obtain a GBAO permit in addition to their Tajik visa in order to explore this breathtaking mountain region.
How to Obtain a GBAO Permit
There are two main options:
1 Apply Online (E-Visa Option)
When applying for a Tajik e-visa, you will see an option to request a GBAO permit. Simply select “Yes,” and your permit will be issued together with your visa — the easiest and most convenient method.
2 Apply in Dushanbe (In Person)
You may apply after arriving in Dushanbe by visiting the Central OVIR office (Department of Visas and Registration), located opposite the Rumi Hotel.
What to expect:
1 Bring a copy of your passport (original is usually not required).
2 Go to the registration windows (typically numbers 13, 14, or 15).
3 You will need to submit a written request in Tajik. Since most travelers do not speak Tajik, a local assistant in the corridor can helpprepare the document for a small service fee (around 30 somoni).
4 The official permit fee is approximately 70–80 somoni.
5 Processing time usually takes 2–4 hours, depending on how busy the office is.
While manageable, the process can feel time-consuming for travelers on a tight schedule.

What Is GBAO and Why Do You Need a Permit?
The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) is a spectacular mountainous region in eastern Tajikistan, famous for its dramatic landscapes, remote villages, and breathtaking high-altitude routes.
Foreign travelers must obtain a special GBAO permit in addition to their Tajik visa in order to enter this region.
A Brief Historical Background
GBAO’s unique status dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Central Asia became the focus of a geopolitical rivalry between the United Kingdom and the Russian Empire during the “Great Game.”
As part of diplomatic negotiations, the historic region of Badakhshan was divided along the Panj River (known in Afghanistan as the Amu Darya). The right bank became part of Afghan Badakhshan, while the left bank evolved into today’s GBAO.
Later, the region became an autonomous area within the Soviet Union and subsequently part of independent Tajikistan.
Due to its strategic location and long borders with Afghanistan and China, GBAO was once a restricted border zone during Soviet times. Special permission was required even for local residents. Today, while Tajik citizens may travel freely, foreign visitors are still required to obtain a GBAO permit.
Alternative Ways to Get a GBAO Permit
If you prefer to arrange it yourself, there are two options:
1 E-Visa Application
When applying for a Tajik e-visa online, simply select the GBAO permit option. It will be issued together with your visa.
2 Apply in Person in Dushanbe
You may also apply at the Central OVIR office (Department of Visas and Registration) in Dushanbe, located opposite the Rumi Hotel.
However, the in-person process can take several hours and requires paperwork in Tajik, which may be inconvenient for travelers on a tight schedule.
