iskandarkul lake is located in Fann mountains. The Iskandarkul lake is biggest lake in the Fann mountains. From Dushanbe is 3& half hours drive. The distance is 135km from Dushanbe, 220km from Khujand and 212km from Samarqand (Uzbekistan).The lake is between the Hissar mountains range and Fann mountain, lake size is 2,7km long and 72m is the deepest part. Iskandarkul lake is 2200m above the sea level. Also to get there you need to hire prevate car because its detour from the main road. The lake colour is turquoise especially in Summer time and of course every season Iskanderkul lake change its colour, for example in Spring its get dark-blue colour. The surrounding of Iskanderkul lake is extraordinary, shape of two mountains reflect the saddale of horse and junipars around the lake makes it very special. There is a legend that once Alexander the Great with its horse get to this place and he lost his horse in this areas, so the name Iskander reffer to Alexander. Although local lingvists state that the name of the lake is not Iskandar but from old (Sogdian language) Istakul which means (stop lake) and later during Soviet time they transformed this name to Iskandar kul lake for tourism purposes. Nearby Iskandarkul lake there is no any villages only two villages that located above Iskandarkul lake is Saratoq village and Muztoq village and the first village is a perfact place to overnight or to do day hike.
